What the Gods Allow - J.S.Frankel

I didn't quite know what to expect when I began reading this book. I've read others by this author and enjoyed them. I was not disappointed. Once again we have a fast-paced read, totally addictive and something out of the ordinary.

'What the Gods Allow', is a book of fiction based on Greek Gods, who in their very history have more outrageous claims than their Roman counterparts. Medusa, Zeus, Poseidon are very well-known names which we all recognize. As a fictional book it matters not which parts are factual or fictional any more than the tales of legend.

The author, Frankel, has given us a different take on Medusa, the all-hissing, snake-headed monster and turned her into a resilient, tough but fair Gorgon. Sentenced to a three millenia sentence, in a cell with a stone bed, she has no choice than to fall in line. She was beheaded and now begins her life in death. After journeying through the rancid River Styx with the boatman, Hades, Medusa loses track of time in prison.

When she is summoned by Zeus and his wife, Hera, hundreds of years later they expect her to take their offer of a challenge. Bring their daughter home. Dropped to Earth in a strange town in modern day, Meddy as she is now known in human form soon meets and helps Sam. The almost blind and deaf man who is to steal her heart. This is a clever plot, with twists and turns and a great description of Tartarus and a different take on Medusa. Great read, thoroughly recommend.

I read this book in one sitting. J.S.Frankel is a very talented author who can turn his hand to many styles of books. I was amazed at the description of the Gods, River Styx and the helldom surroundings. This is just as good an adaption as any you would read or see on screen. It crossed my mind more than once how good this story would be visually. Great stuff and written with a pace ensuring you won't put it down. Five stars, no problem!
