Everything begins when the Beckett family move to an island, which the thirteen and nine-year-old sister and brother think is going to be completely boring; how wrong could you be? Many eyes are upon them as the ferry brings them to Waters End one autumn evening. It isn't only the inhabitants on the seven islands, it is also a King in another realm and a time travelling spaceship high in the atmosphere who are watching with interest.

All are waiting for history to take its course. Some want the siblings to succeed in their quests, mankind is depending on them. Others don't want them there at all and are determined to be rid of Scarlett and Mason. Their magical new teacher won't intend to let them down but she isn't always as careful as she should be; who will pay the price? She should never have underestimated them. As time evolves, so do the siblings, slow, subtle changes give them clues all is not as it seems and they are not who they thought they were.

Here is one part for you as a taster:

Scarlett had been spending a lot of her spare time reading through the library books and, in her mind, she was quite familiar with the rough layout of the direction they were heading. Mostly they walked, keeping an eye on the wayfinder to make sure the cross was still in view.

“I think,” she said to Mason, “we are heading towards a place known as the Hidden Bay, with a cave. From what I know about it, it’s large, full of bats and was used as a dropping-off point by pirates. A base where the treasure was transported through tunnels and hidden around the island; chests full of money that was taken from the peasants.”

“Sounds like a nice place!” Mason grinned.

“Oh, it gets better. Apparently, it is also haunted by the ghost pirates who went down with the Jolly Sea ship. That’s also buried under the water around that side too,” Scarlett told him.

“Dunno about a geography lesson, more like a spooky one. Sounds great, can’t wait to see this.” Mason felt quite excited.

“You can see the next island from around there too. It’s not that far really. Maybe we can get to it one day in the other little boat?”

Scarlett carried on explaining the layout around the island she’d researched from their old house and read up on over the last few days. Mason was half listening to it, concentrating on the direction they were headed and wondering just exactly what it was that all these new ‘gadgets’ did.

“Let’s stop a few minutes,” he said. “We need to check some stuff out.” They sat themselves down on some large rocks, and he delved into his bag.

“Okay, let’s see what these do.”

First, he took out the eye patch and placed it over his eye.

“Oh, my goodness!” he shouted. “Quick Scarlett, get your one out.”

She did so and put hers on as well.

“Oh, my giddy aunt!” she exclaimed.

They both sat still and were amazed they could see everything all around their heads. The whole complete circle.

“360-degree vision,” said Mason.

Scarlett replied, “yes, and look ahead of you.” They could both now see a whole lot further than they could before.

“Wicked,” said Mason, taking his off. He pulled out the earphones. Everything was so amplified he could hear the men talking back on the beach, and they were over an hour away from them. Scarlett again copied her brother; she could hear something odd as well.

“Listen to that,” she pointed down to the sand.

“This way, this way, hurry, hurry, come on, come on, move it, move it.”

They were not alone on the beach; something was under the sand. Many somethings by the sound of it. What on earth could it be? Of course, trailing their every move were the sand duners. Both nosy and naughty.

Scarlett dug deep into her bag and pulled out the last two items delivered yesterday.

She tried on the thin gloves and nothing seemed to happen.

“I wonder what these are for?” she asked Mason.

He put his on as well and pointed with them. Nothing happened. He rubbed his hands together and whoosh, a bright light shone out. He placed his hands down near the ground in between the dark rocks making the light even brighter.

“Amazing, our own inbuilt torchlights, wicked!”

Lastly, they took out their knee pads and fastened them on.

“I don’t think they are to help us walk quicker or anything; our insoles do that trick,” said Mason thoughtfully.

He thought for a moment and then got down onto his knees in the sand. He pressed down on his knees and shot up into the air.

“Whoa!” he laughed, “you gotta try these babies!”

He and Scarlett spent the next five minutes trying out the pads on different surfaces seeing who could get the highest. They were getting almost as high up as the tree- tops. The harder the surface, the more ‘bounce’ they got.

“Stop! Stop!” she shouted to him. “We have to get on with what we were doing.” It was so exhilarating they had been side-tracked.

They carried on walking again.

“The thing is Mason, all of this might be a lot of fun, but we have been given all of this for a reason, and we have to work that out.”

After a few minutes, he replied. “So, we can see a lot, hear a lot, have the power to run away at great speed, spring high upwards, and light up the darkest places on the planet.”

“Exactly,” she answered. “Do you get the feeling we will need all the help we can get? I think this will be a lot harder than we first thought; whatever it is that we’ve got to do. Fancy a run?”

Elvira gave a quick push of a button on her screen to see whereabouts the pair were. Halfway there and still on course. Good. Time for a test, she thought.

Moon and Sun be Sun and Moon

Let midnight take the place of noon

Stars awake and shineth bright

Tis now your world the dark of night

Scarlett and Mason stopped abruptly. What was going on now? One minute it was daytime, and now it was the pitch-black of night. The moon shone brightly, and the clear night sky was full of stars.

Mason looked very puzzled, as did Scarlett. The wayfinder was now on a night mode screen, and the X marking the spot was illuminated. They were heading in the same direction, but they couldn’t see.
