A snippet from The Mystery of the Ancient Key.

The follow-up to the award-winning Witchetty Waters series.

Would you like a peek inside? Two years have passed since the quests at Witchetty Waters took place. Don't be fooled! The books are suitable for a reading age of around 9 to 199. (Or thereabouts!)

“Are you sitting comfortably?”

“Strange question, Ruby,” Darren replied. Darren was turning upside-down as he spoke.

Scarlett was blowing in the wind, holding onto the staircase for safety; Charlie had his face stuck to the side of the fish tank and Mason was furiously rocking away in a chair in the corner.

“Let’s start at the beginning then,” Aldrich began the story. “Hard to know where to begin; one minute there I was, sitting talking with King Gregory, when suddenly there was a crisis.”

They felt a rush, the familiarity of a portal and then they found themselves plunging deep into cold waters. It was dark, very dark. “Let me put some light on the matter.” Aldrich lit some candles, placing them on the table. “Of course, I can’t be too specific; but you will find out soon enough.”

Ruby could see the four of them were shivering; she was the only bird in the wizarding world who possessed a wand. Flying around, she encased them all in sparkling rays of warmth; the water must be cold.

“Where was I? oh yes, swim faster now, the quicker you move, the warmer you will be.” Aldrich continued.

Charlie found it difficult as he was also battling the wind of the staircase now.

“What on earth is that?” Darren looked quite alarmed.

“It is the monster! I can see it quite clearly.” Scarlett had never seen anything as big as this.

“You can see right inside its stomach, look at everything in there.” Mason was alarmed. All four of them were staring into space, they were in the dry room, but only in body. Their minds were elsewhere.

“The monster has something, but it does not belong to her, back you come now.” A large staircase appeared in front of them, grabbing hold of it they stepped up, higher and higher, until they were out of the water, and at the top of the spiral stairs in 'Ness Cottage'.

Their dripping wet clothes dried immediately. “So, it’s true then? The Loch Ness monster does exist.” Darren asked Aldrich.

“It is your story, not mine.” The wizard smiled. “But we do have one or two clues for you.” Ruby scrabbled inside the large cage in the corner, from underneath the coarse sandpaper and pieces of greenery she pulled out a piece of paper with her beak. She flew to Mason this time, and he took the paper from her.

“Tea, anyone?” Aldrich had the biggest teapot that anyone ever saw, it was busily pouring the brown liquid into a row of mugs. “Just the thing after a dip.” Helping themselves to milk and sugar, they all sat at the table once more, grateful for the warming drink. In fact, it was the best tea they had ever tasted; it tingled every single taste bud.

Mason placed his mini map on the table, together with the scrap of paper. The landing area was visible, as was the cottage, the shimmering loch danced on the map; one area had small white flags, like markers. The paper had a drawing of the mouth-shaped cake, the urn of tea, colourful drinks, a rolled parchment and a rotund, huge man with big red cheeks. That was it, apart from an oblong wooden box.

“We have to go under the loch in The Dragonfly, don’t we Aldrich?”

“Yes Charlie, in search of Nessie.”

“Thank you, we are very grateful for your hospitality, Aldrich, but we do need to go.” Scarlett turned to find the back door was open, neither the wizard nor Ruby was anywhere to be seen.

The large chest underneath the window was also open, poking out of it was a harpoon. Not only that, there was a bow and arrow. The weapons were puzzling. Darren and Charlie took one item each. Mason peaked inside to see if there was anything else, and there was. A bowie knife used by hunters.

Everything had suddenly taken on a dark turn.
