The Snow- Globe World-20

‘Can we go inside? Is there a way?’ Toby was shaking the beautiful snow- globe, watching the snow twirling around and around.
Lucy had one too. Her globe was very special. It was Grandmother’s and Great Grandmother’s and very probably Great, Great, Grandmother’s too. The only problem was, she was afraid to shake it because it was so old.
Toby was little, so he had a new shiny globe with a very pretty Christmas tree inside. But, Lucy’s was special. Made of dark wood at the bottom, with a gold plaque which said: ‘Snowy Hollow.’ The children had never seen a globe quite like this one before. This was the first time that mother had taken it out of the box to give to her daughter. Of course, the glass was not quite as shiny as it used to be, and the plaque was a little bit dark in places, but it was a treasure. A real treasure, and Lucy wanted to keep it forever and ever.
‘What did you say? Lucy asked Toby.
‘Can we go inside the snow- globe?’
Lucy laughed. ‘Don’t be silly, Toby, how can we? After all it is just a pretend world.’
‘Snowy Hollow looks really lovely, doesn’t it?’ Toby was fascinated by the special globe his sister had, in fact, he had stopped shaking his one.
‘Yes, it does look lovely.’ Lucy stared long and hard at the globe. ‘I have an idea, wait here, Toby.’
His sister ran off and came back with a huge magnifying glass.
The two of them took turns looking through it. Snowy Hollow had lots of houses, and a big toy shop, a bridge and skiers, skiing down a large slope. There were cobbled streets and a huge Christmas tree with lights on, in the village square. Small children were playing. Grown-ups were selling hot chestnuts or pushing prams, everyone was very busy.
‘Will you shake it, very gently?’ Toby asked.
Lucy nodded. Holding the globe with both hands she began to rock it backwards and forwards before placing it back down on the table.
The snow began to fall inside, so did the gold twinkles, this globe had both effects. Snow and tiny pieces of gold shavings twirled around and around, moving very fast.
Both children were sharing the magnifying glass. Their eyes were as big as saucers as they lay on the floor, staring into the magical world of Snowy Hollow.
‘The children are running! Lucy, look at them!’
‘Why, so they are!’ Lucy exclaimed with surprise.
‘Look, Toby, the people are really skiing now trying to catch all the snow.’ They were too.
Fascinated, the children watched everything that was happening inside this tiny world.
Children came out of the shops, they had hoops and skates and bags of sweets. Wrapped in their nice warm hats and gloves, they were playing, catching the falling snow, making snowballs that were full of glitter. The snow was still whizzing around, it wasn’t stopping.
Father poked his head around the door, ‘Are you both alright? You are very quiet this morning,’ he said.
‘Yes, thank you,’ Toby replied. ‘We are watching the people inside the big globe.’
‘Are you now? Well, have fun!’ Father left the room and closed the door behind him.
‘Oh, look, Toby, that little boy is waving at us.’ Lucy smiled and waved back...
